Out with the old...

 


Sunday, April 2nd was a bittersweet day. Many longtime skiers of the resort, including myself, took their final rides on the main double lift. As I took one last slow ride up the mountain, I couldn't help but notice the quiet, calming nature of the lift. Having carried skiers for 62 years, the machine feels as much a part of the mountain as the trees that shape the runs. 


The energy of the day felt more like a memorial tribute than a fun day on the slopes as people came to pay their respects to the lift that was integral to so many of their great memories. At 4:27pm the original 1961 double chairlift carried its last passengers for the final time. Rita, a patroller on the mountain for 40 years called the last chair and rode up in front of Lee, the longtime operator of the lift, and his daughter who learned to ski on these slopes. I was lucky enough to capture the moment in the video above. 

The very next day, work began to remove chairs from the lift, starting the long road to completion of the new Voyageur Express lift that will be installed this summer. Many of the chairs have already found a new calling as mementos for loyal riders and fans of lifts from across the country. If you haven't secured yours yet, don't wait, opportunities are running out to bid on a chair of your own. We'll be keeping a few for ourselves to use as spares for our 5 center-pole riblet chairs that will remain for years to come.

The grooming team also took to their machines to begin clearing the project areas of snow. While we are stoked to have had an above-average season for snowfall, the deep snowpack does present us with a few challenges for this construction season. Our timeline calls for initial excavation for the drive terminal to begin on May 1st. In order to stay on schedule we need to remove as much snow as we can from the site and hope mother nature lends us a helping hand to melt what's left, dry, and thaw the ground so we can begin on time. Duane and Brandon are moving massive amounts of snow to give us as strong of a head start on mud season as we can get.

... In With the New

Just one day after the Original Double carried passengers for the final time, shipments of parts for the new lift began arriving from Wolfurt, Austria. A journey of over 4,000 miles from eastern Austria began months ago and ended just in time for the end of our season. Good thing too, because we're going to need all the space in the parking lot we can get. These first three containers to arrive contained much of the steel cladding and roof panels for the new lift terminals. I find it funny that some of the last things to be needed are among the first to arrive.

July Already?!

In the month since I last sat down to chronicle all the activity on the mountain, we have accomplished A LOT. The team from Ruotsalas has completed pouring concrete and backfilled the foundations for Towers 2-10. This leaves Tower 1 and all four terminal foundations to complete but is still a big milestone as it allows us to revegetate the access roads created to reach tower locations on the side of the hill.  The rest of the pours are much more easily accessible via pre-existing and solid roadways, meaning rainy weather is much less of a threat to our forward progress.  Tower 9 foundation is backfilled with grass already growing. -7/8/2023 With the Tower foundations substantially completed, the focus shifts to the top and bottom terminal locations. Just Getting Started

I had the opportunity to get out skiing with my Dad and my Sister on Sunday to wrap up the weekend. It was great to be out on the snow. Shanty Boy was a blast. Smooth, fast, and steep. Was fun to think that we're really just getting started, with so much more terrain to open and enjoy this season. The conditions were made even better by my brand new boots from Big Snow Outfitters in Bessemer. Growing up, my first few pairs of skis and boots all came from BSO's retired rental fleet, so of course it was the first place I thought to look to get my slightly packed out boots fitted properly. Walking into the store brought back so many childhood memories of stopping by the store after a day of skiing to enjoy the warmth of the wood burning fire and browse around dreaming of what equipment I'd buy when I grew up. Thanks for a Great Opening Weekend!

We had an excellent first weekend of skiing and riding at Black River Basin. It was fantastic to see so many familie s and friends enjoying time together on the slopes over thanksgiving weekend.  The weather was a real treat with warm bluebird days on Friday and Saturday that felt more like  early  March than late November.  It was the perfect opportunity to try out the new deck furniture while soaking in some rays and a cold drink.  It's  n ot too  often  we get the chance to do that so early in t he season.   While the weather was superb, my favorite part of the weekend was the chance to meet so many of the people that call these hills home for the winter . The soul of skiing was alive and well on the slopes over the past four days reminding me that i t really is the people that make the pla ce .
