Halftime

Today we cross over the halfway mark on this 2022-2023 winter season. Hard to believe it's half over already, but I like to focus on the half still remaining. In a lot of ways, I feel the best parts of our season are yet to come. Spring skiing has always been my favorite, even beating out a mid-winter powder day in my eyes and we're poised to host a hearty helping of spring turns this year. With half the season left to go, the team and I continue to field feedback and make operational adjustments to continue providing the best possible experience each and every day.

New Enhanced Teaching Terrain

Charlie and Bryan collaborate in the cat. - Monday, January 30th, 2023

Brian from our snow school has partnered with our cat crew this week to shape up some really neat terrain in our Sugar Hills Learning Area. They've built a mini half-pipe and three large banked turns. These features will be used to introduce new skiers to the snow in more intuitive ways. Rather than having to explain how to turn or how to get on edge, the sculpted terrain will naturally lead each skier or rider's body to move with the terrain and build the muscle memory needed to make turns, stand on a side slope, side-step and other formative skills needed for our sport. In the end, this makes for a faster, more fun learning experience for our new skiers and riders. Bryan is looking forward to getting people out on the new terrain this weekend. Remember to book a lesson in advance online or by calling our fine folks at the ticket desk.

Dudley's Reopening

We're excited to be returning Dudley's to our evening entertainment offerings. While we had planned to develop a late-night music venue at Jack's for this season, so far those plans haven't materialized in the way we'd hoped. So we're going to give Dudley's a chance to earn its keep for the rest of the season. The facilities and F&B teams have been working away this week to clear out and dust off the bar in preparation for the Grand Re-Opening this Friday. We've booked EMBER for an extra night to celebrate. They'll be playing 7:30pm-11pm on both Friday and Saturday nights. With the forecast warming up for the weekend and rooms still available in the lodge, I wouldn't wait long to call our reservations team and book a quick weekend getaway to the UP. Come join in the fun!

U.S. Ski & Snowboard Terrain, Elements, and Speed Events Project

This Friday-Monday we will be hosting the Central Division of USSA for their annual speed camp. The camp focuses on the fundamentals of gliding, aerodynamics, skiing on challenging terrain, and jumping. A specialized course has been built with rollers, jumps, and other terrain features to enhance the training opportunities. It will be fun to watch from the chairlift throughout the weekend. They will be training on F.I.S. and Borealis Friday-Sunday culminating with a competition on the courses on Monday. F.I.S. and Borealis will remain closed to the public for the duration of the weekend for the camp.

Hot Tub Update

Our facility maintenance team was able to find another source who was able to locate and deliver the new pumps we've been waiting on for months to get the Hot Tub back up and running. All the necessary parts arrived by Tuesday of this week. I'm told that if all goes well, the hot tub will be back open to guests by the weekend. Perfect timing to be able to grab a drink in Dudley's and head over to relax in the tub while the kids splash around in the pool. I'm ready to see the Lodge back firing on all cylinders.

Opening Weekend at Jackson Creek Summit

Yesterday was opening day at Jackson Creek Summit. It was exciting to welcome guests into the renovated Summit Center, now named the Sugar Maple Chalet. It was fun to watch our long time season pass holders check out all the changes we'd made to a place they've been so familiar with over the years. Who knew carpeting and anti-slip vinyl flooring could be such an exciting change.  The rental shop is finally finished and welcomed it's first renters yesterday. The space turned out great thanks to the hard work from many hands. It's so neat to see families get outfitted in their gear before heading straight onto the beginner slopes, just a few steps away. Our staff particularly appreciates the opportunity to watch their customers take their first turns, instead of being stuck in the windowless shop they previously called home.  We did have a few hang-ups in our plan that caused us to modify our operations for opening day and the rest of the weekend. As part of the construc...

A Flurry of Activity

The Sugar Maple Chalet (former Summit Center) is really starting to come together, with renovations wrapping up in preparation for our opening day this Friday. Between contractors and our own team, there is quite the flurry of activity going on as I write this morning. We're going to be running down to the wire with a number of finishing touches. The new ticket windows are nearing completion, with just the windows themselves yet to be installed. Delivery is scheduled for Wednesday, and the crew will get to work on installing them as soon as they arrive. In the meantime, we'll be working on setting up the computers with our point-of-sale systems to be ready for our guests on Friday. Once complete, all day tickets and rentals will be sold out of these windows. Season pass pickup will be available at the guest service counter inside the chalet. The new carpet, paint, and furniture has made a tremendous difference inside the chalet. The classic charm of the building really shines w...

Just Getting Started

I had the opportunity to get out skiing with my Dad and my Sister on Sunday to wrap up the weekend. It was great to be out on the snow. Shanty Boy was a blast. Smooth, fast, and steep. Was fun to think that we're really just getting started, with so much more terrain to open and enjoy this season. The conditions were made even better by my brand new boots from Big Snow Outfitters in Bessemer. Growing up, my first few pairs of skis and boots all came from BSO's retired rental fleet, so of course it was the first place I thought to look to get my slightly packed out boots fitted properly. Walking into the store brought back so many childhood memories of stopping by the store after a day of skiing to enjoy the warmth of the wood burning fire and browse around dreaming of what equipment I'd buy when I grew up. The nostalgia must have got to me because it wasn't long before I was walking out with a new pair of Lange boots. Apparently the boots I'd been rocking for the pa...
